SSI Tutorial: Using SSI

Upon opening SSI, you can choose to start a system scan by clicking "Start Scan" on the left side of the main page.During this scan SSI will run through your computer receiving details of the files of your pc. None of this is user sensitive information, merely properties of files. SSI will scan the current memory for running processes and linked files, your start up list, BHOs (Browser Helper Objects), LSPs (Layered Service Provider), and a general scan of your file system. After collecting this data, SSI compares it to our database at Spywaredata.com and analyzes what good files, bad files, and unknown files it found on your pc.

- Initial Scan

Upon completion of this scan, your personalized reports page will appear and display what bad and unknown files we found on your machine. From here you have the option to have SSI remove anything on this results page should you purchase a removal membership.

- Scan Memory

SSI can now scan the processes running in memory right now. Clicking on Memory Inspection will bring you to Scan Memory options. Scan memory will result in a list of processes currently running on your machine. Once the scan is finished, clicking on any process in the display box will expand out and show all of the dependent files that process is using.

- Show Malware

SSI is also able to compare your process list to Spywaredata.com's spyware database and show only the bad and unknown processes and dependent files by clicking "Show only Malware" in the lower left corner of the application. This will allow for you to more easily identify which running process and/or dependent file is harming your pc and using up resources. Should you see a running process or dependent file that is harming your pc you can click the box next to them and then click "Kill checked items." This will shutdown the process and dependent files allowing you to delete them manually.

- Prevent Respawn

However, SSI knows that most malicious processes are quickly resumed after being killed. Because of this we included special features with this kill process. Clicking the boxes, "Prevent Respawn" and "Backup Item", will enhance SSI's process killing method to deal with such threats. "Prevent Respawn", as it's names suggests, continues to kill the process and stop it from loading back up in memory and running again, thus allowing you to go in and delete the file without fear that it might restart before you have a chance to. "Backup Item" will create a backup file of whatever process is killed. This is incase a file is killed and deleted but is a critical file for many applications--accidents do happen.

- HijackThis Analyzer

HijackThis is a commonly used analyzer tool to scan the registry, startup, running processes, BHO's and LSPs of a system. It produces a log, sometimes very lengthy and difficult to look at. Because of this we have included a HijackThis Log parser. Clicking on "Open Hijack This Log" will open up an Open File dialogue window where you select your HijackThis Log and click open. SSI will immediately begin to read and parse the log. Once it is finished, SSI will open up a notepad window with the new parsed log. This log will contain all of the malicious and unknown files on your machine according to the Spywaredata.com spyware database. This tool allows for users to quickly diagnose what is hijacking their system.

- ADS Scanner

ADS (Alternate Data Stream) is a place where spyware can hide. This allows for spyware to reside inside of commonly used files but not show any difference in file size, company name, or even opening up in notepad--the common methods of detection to find spyware files. SSI is now able to sift through the ADS of files to see if spyware is hiding in the header section of files. SSI gives you the option of scanning a drive, directory, or a single file for hidden threats. Upon scanning any, all of the targets with something in their ADS are shown and SSI gives you the option of viewing the ADS and/or deleting it from the ADS of a file.

- File Researcher

File Researcher allows for you to open up any file and have SSI scan it and compare it with Spywaredata.com's spyware database. It will also tell you if this file contains an ADS, is an ActiveX control, BHO, a toolbar, and is in startup. It will also display the file's dependencies. This aids you in identifying what all is tied to a bad file and what exactly it is doing when it is executed.

- Internet Connection

This function of SSI monitors your network traffic. This shows what processes are accessing your network interface and what their remote destination IP is. It will also show the process id, local port, remote port, and the domain name of the remote entity it is connecting to. This allows for users to identify which processes are calling network protocols and where they are connecting to. So if a process is connecting to a known spyware vendor then a user can be certain their machine is indeed under attack from malicious software.

- Options

Here you can configure SSI for various things. You can have SSI start on start up and automatically check for updates by checking the boxes in the main options window. You can also update SSI manually by clicking the "Check for Updates" text. You may also view our privacy policy by clicking on the "Privacy Policy" text on the right.

If you have purchased a subscription for SSI removal services you can enter your Magic word by clicking on "Register SSI" on the right side.
